The energy transition looks completely different in sub-Saharan Africa than in Europe - the conditions are completely different. More than 600 million people have no access to electricity. There are rapidly growing cities and yet the majority still live in rural areas, which are often not connected to the central power grid. Here, renewable energies (especially solar energy!) have a huge potential to electrify whole regions in a decentralized way and thus also trigger economic growth. Our two guests Torsten Schreiber (Africa GreenTec) and Prof. Peter Adelmann (Ulm University of Technology) have been working in the field of photovoltaics for years and are optimistic that off-grid solar systems will not only beat many diesel generators in price and replace them, but will also be able to supply many villages with electricity for the first time. Above all, they say, it is important that Europe should not be taken as a model when it comes to grid expansion and the use of renewable energies.
