What is still missing so that batteries can also be used in aircrafts? A much higher energy density, for sure. In the GELADEN-Podcast, we discuss the latest research results from China, which make people sit up and take notice. There, a gravimetric energy density of 711 Wh/kg and a volumetric energy density of even 1653 Wh/L are announced. By comparison, current lithium-ion batteries achieve 250 Wh/kg and 450 Wh/L.
The research results could not only mean a breakthrough for battery-powered aircrafts, but also give electric cars another boost. Prof. Maximilian Fichtner from the Helmholtz Institute in Ulm puts this announcement into context for us. Will this battery be on the market soon? Or what is still missing for the market launch?
