How do electricity prices come about? Is the merit order model, by which the price on the electricity exchange is formed, still up to date with regards to the increased switch to renewable energies? Our expert in the Geladen Podcast, Prof. Dr. Bruno Burger (KIT & Fraunhofer) assumes that in the future there will be more and more extreme situations like the one on February 10, 2023. There was a lot of wind in the north, low electricity exchange prices, the power plants in the south were not used, pumped storage then bought a lot of electricity, the north-south lines had too little capacity and so power plants in the south were activated for redispatch. We discuss electricity price zones, merit order reform, power lines and grid expansion.
