Some electric cars can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in 18 minutes at a fast charger. However, this is still the exception. A battery change, as offered by the Chinese automaker NIO, is much quicker at 5 minutes. Together with Dr. Joachim Sann from the University of Giessen, we compare the statements made by NIO representative Daniel Medawar in the last episode and compare changing and charging the traction battery. What will be exciting about the two concepts is whether a well-developed fast-charging network with better charging times will drive the swapping stations away again, or whether battery swapping may even make fast-charging stations obsolete if other automakers adopt the concept as well. One sticking point for battery swapping with other car brands will be the standardization of traction batteries.
