The picture of shipping and its contribution to the climate crisis is ambiguous. On the one hand, in contrast to other modes of transport, ship transports are considered more climate-friendly. On the other hand, holiday trips with large cruise liners are repeatedly demonized. Sören Ehlers, Director of the DLR Institute of Maritime Energy Systems, explains in this episode how ships will be powered on the oceans in the future. We discuss with him the problems that the fuel heavy oil causes at the moment and which drives and fuels will be available in the future on short and medium-haul and long-haul routes for a transformation to climate-neutral shipping. Particular attention is paid to the shipping companies and shipbuilders and their challenges in the conversion of the fleets. Or do we as consumers ultimately decide how quickly shipping changes?
