In order to be able to take on the role of a key technology in the European energy transition, batteries must become more sustainable and better recyclable. In addition, the EU must become less dependent on countries like China and Russia for raw materials and battery production. To this end, it has presented a comprehensive regulation, which we discuss with MEP Malte Gallée and Prof. Dr. Maximilian Fichtner. We put a focus on climate-neutral production of batteries, recycling of critical raw materials, mandatory labeling of batteries as well as the origin of all materials and manufacturer guarantees of battery life.
