The answer to the problem of fluctuating energy from wind and sun could be huge lithium-ion battery power plants. Battery storage systems that absorb surplus energy and feed it into the grid precisely when demand is higher are becoming increasingly economical, but play only a minor role in the German government's climate plans. What role will they play in the energy transition in the future? Are they also suitable as seasonal long-term storage and which battery types will become established in this area? We talk about this in this episode with Prof. Volker Quaschning and Prof. Maximilian Fichtner.
