The Chinese battery cell manufacturer CATL is working on a new technology for more powerful electric cars. Following "cell to pack" technology, in which the cells are integrated directly into the battery pack without the intermediate step of battery modules, the focus is now on "cell to chassis". Here, the battery cells are integrated directly into the body of electric cars, which means that not only the modules but also the packs are eliminated. This would eliminate the need for the bulky housings that are usually installed in the underbody of cars today. Eliminating the modules and pack saves space and increases range. We discuss whether the two technologies could also bring disadvantages in terms of safety and maintenance with Benno Leuthner from CUSTOMCELLS.
